FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ): REIKI ENERGY HEALING

Q: WHAT IS REIKI?

A.  REIKI is an ancient tradition of hands-on healing using light touch to bring BALANCE to the Human Energy Field (HEF) or aura.  The Reiki practitioner becomes a channel through which higher vibrational energy passes to the recipient, in order to return her energy field to a state of balance.  It does this by replacing old energy with new energy; repairing holes and tears; and dissolving blockages in the aura.  The practitioner gains access to the energy field, with the recipient’s permission, through her chakras . . . like doors to a building.

Q.  WHAT IS UNIVERSAL ENERGY?

A.  It has many names throughout the world: Ki, Chi, Qi, Prana, Reiki and many more -- all referring to the energy that pervades the universe.  Universal Energy.  Long story short . . . Energy is Everything & Everything is Energy.  Thoughts are energy.  Emotions are energy.  Music is energy.  Light is energy.  Motion is kinetic energy.  EVERYTHING is energy.

Heard of quantum physics?  It is the bridge between science and spirituality, telling us that subatomic particles have no size or shape, but exist only as energy.  Thus, energy is the basic building block of all creation, animate and inanimate.  Because everything is energy, everything is in motion, everything vibrates, everything has frequency – including bricks, flowers, and human beings.  Please “google” “Kirlian Photography” to see awesome images of the energy field/aura of many animate and inanimate objects.

Q.  WHAT IS THE HUMAN ENERGY FIELD OR AURA?

A.  In science it is called a bio-energy field.  In energy healing, we call it an aura.  These are interchangeable terms for the energy that pervades our bodies.  It is the energy you feel when you sense someone standing next to you whom you didn’t know was there.  The same way you can feel if someone is sad or happy or energetic, lethargic, depressed, etc.  You feel their aura/energy field mixing with yours.  Have you ever been rubbed the wrong way the minute you shook hands with someone?  You are feeling something dissonant in his/her energy field.

Your energy field/aura can develop weak spots, tears, even rips and blockages, which hinder the energy flow to other areas in your field.  Reiki energy helps to remove the blockages and repair the thinning layers, tears and fissures that negative emotions, thoughts, or low vibration foods, chemical products, and prescription medicine can create.   To see the human auric field, please copy and paste this link in your browser (www.auraphoto.com).

Q.  WHAT IS A CHAKRA?

A.  There are seven major centers of energetic power – or chakras -- in our bodies.  Each chakra correlates to particular emotions as well as physical organs and glands, or systems.  Chakra, in Sanskrit, means “wheel,” because each chakra looks like a vortex, which spins energy into, through and out of your energy field/aura.  The chakras are the doors through which the Reiki practitioner (with permission) enters your aura with the new energy that effects positive change.  There’s much more to say about chakras, but for our purposes, suffice that chakras act like the “pistons” (pumps) of our engines (bodies) that move the fuel (energy) to all parts of that system.

Sometimes chakras get clogged or “blocked.”  Liken this to how hair clogs the shower drain or how rocks can impede the flow of water through a stream.  If you have hindrances or blockages, you may feel a bit lethargic and can even feel energetically depleted.  Reiki energy helps to heal the tears and release blockages in your energy field, thereby restoring high energy flow and magnetism to your aura.

Q.  WHY IS ENERGETIC BALANCE IMPORTANT?

A.  Balance is important is all aspects of life.  Our physical bodies have various mechanisms and systems in place that constantly try to keep us in balance or “homeostasis” and, consequently, free from disease.  Just as medical doctors seek to help their patients’ physical bodies return to homeostasis, so do energy healers for energetic bodies.  Stressors of all sorts can take us out of energetic balance.  Quick bursts or prolonged experiences of anger, frustration, anxiety and such are signs of energetic imbalance on some level (spiritual, mental/thought or emotional), especially if recurring.  Reiki energy healing can help bring your energy back into balance, promoting a healthier, happier, more peaceful state of being.

Q.  HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

A.  Essentially, there is a Reiki practitioner and a recipient, who is lying down or seated.  The practitioner states an intention and becomes a channel or conduit through which higher vibrational energy is transferred to the recipient, mainly using the chakra system.  Through a process including vibration, resonance and entrainment, the recipient's energy will naturally shift to a higher vibration.  It’s like a blood transfusion . . . but for your energy field.

Energy has innate intelligence in its flow.  Just as your lungs know when to breathe and your heart knows when to beat, your body knows what energy is needed and where, and directs the new energy to distressed areas in your energy field – no matter the location of the practitioner’s hands, on or off your body.  The energy is also transferred to whatever level (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) is intended or in need.

Q.  HOW CAN REIKI ENERGY BE FELT OR PERCEIVED?

A.  Energy can be felt in MANY ways.  Have you ever felt the energy of another person?  Can you feel if someone is in a sour mood, happy, joyful or upset, even if he isn’t saying a thing or says the opposite?  Sometimes we experience Reiki energy as fluctuations in atmospheric temperature, yawning, varying vibrations, sound resonance, seeing colors or flashes of light, a quickening of the skin (goosebumps), electric impulses, undulating waves through the body, high-pitched ringing in the ears, sudden temperature change inside the body . . . and many other sensations.  Sometimes, Reiki energy brings a gentle sense of peace and calm.

Q.  IS REIKI PART OF ANY RELIGION?

A.  Reiki is an ENERGY healing modality and does not belong to any specific religion.  “Hands-on” healing, however, been part of almost every religion since the dawn of time.

Q.  WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE TERM “HEALING” MEAN… (with respect to Reiki)?

A.  “Healing” is a term we use interchangeably with “balance.”  The intent of Reiki energy healing is to encourage the body to return to a state of balance and harmony (homeostasis) on all levels (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) WHOLE-istically.  That return to balance is what helps the body to return to a healthy state – but that usually also involves a bit of homework for the recipient, including life-changes.

Q.  WHY DO I NEED SOMEONE ELSE TO DO REIKI ON ME?  CAN I ENCOURAGE MY BODY TO HEAL ITSELF?

A.  You DON’T need anyone else to perform Reiki on you.  However, it is easier and less time-consuming to receive treatment from a trained and proficient practitioner than it is to research, study and implement self-healing modalities.  I find that, when receiving Reiki, it helps to be in a state of complete mental and physical relaxation (non-activity) for a deeper and more effective result, especially in the beginning as you get used to the energy.  A skilled Reiki practitioner can help you achieve this.  And, even with a practitioner, your personal intention to receive and utilize the Reiki energy, and trust that you will, is a necessary element of healing.  In short, you will participate in your own healing.

Q.  CAN REIKI ENERGY HEALING AFFECT PHYSICAL ILLNESS?

A.  I am not a medical doctor.  However, what I can say is that there have been quite a few happy coincidences where physical ailments have “oddly” disappeared or abated after a client has received one or more Reiki energy healing sessions.  Those ailments include cataracts, anxiety, Hashimoto’s Disease (a thyroid condition), migraines, joint pain, frozen shoulder, degenerative disc disease and pain associated with spinal stenosis.  Reiki has also reduced expected recovery time after surgery and ameliorated symptoms of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

Q. WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A REIKI SESSION?

A.  I always ask my clients to bring intentions to each session, but also to be open and receptive to WHATEVER may happen.  I ask them to expect NOTHING.  Too often we have an idea of what we WANT to happen (expectation) and, if anything different happens, we might be disappointed and feel that it didn’t “work.”  Reiki always works.  Better to stay open and receive . . . like a sponge.  Soak it up, KNOWING it is working.

Q.  HOW DO I KNOW REIKI IS WORKING?

A.  TRUST.  Even if you don’t feel or notice anything, oftentimes someone else will.  I didn’t feel anything the first few times I received Reiki.  I believe my energy was in a place that disabled me from feeling the subtle energies at first.  That quickly changed during my fourth session.  So, for those clients who don’t feel the energy the first time, I often encourage at least one more session, with perhaps less expectation and/or mental chatter.

Often, when someone’s energy is in a place that makes it difficult to feel the energy flow, they will hear from a co-worker, friend or relative who notices a propitious change in them.  Third party validation is VERY helpful, especially when the third party is unaware that a healing took place.  I have received numerous messages over the years from clients who “felt nothing,” but then heard from those around them that something was different.  Typical comments from third parties:  “You ‘feel’ different . . . more alive!”  “You look HAPPY!”  “You seem so calm.” “You look radiant!”  “You’re glowing!”  “You handled that difficult situation/person very well.”

Q.  HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL REIKI ENERGY HEALING SESSION?

A.  A standard Reiki session lasts about 40 minutes.  Here at On The Table, however, the session is more comprehensive and includes a preliminary discussion, an energy treatment (based on your intentions), a sharing of intuitive information gathered during the session, as well as an oracle card reading for guidance and helpful next steps.  Please budget up to 90 minutes for a healing session with us.

Q: CAN REIKI ENERGY HEALING BE PERFORMED FROM A DISTANCE?

A: Yes.  Healing energy is transmitted from the practitioner to the recipient, through intent.  Intent is not bound by space or distance.  Focused thought is intent and intent can travel just like cell-phone waves, or any other invisible waves of information or light.  Just like you feel someone's love for you over the phone.  You are feeling their intent.  Many distance healing recipients report feeling as though the practitioner was standing right next to them before during and after the session.  Intent, via brain waves and heart waves, can be measured and DO have a MEASUREABLE effect on the life force of animate objects.  For more info, copy and paste this link into your browser (www.heartmath.org)

Q.  DO I KEEP MY CLOTHES ON DURING REIKI?

A.  YES!  Reiki is a clothes-on process of energy movement and balancing.

Q.  HOW OFTEN SHOULD SOMEONE RECEIVE HEALING?

A.  Frequency is something I always leave up to the client to decide for him or herself.  I personally like to receive healing at least once a month.  It helps me to stay at a high vibration, essentially protecting and shielding me from lower vibrational people and experiences.   When dealing with traumas or chronic conditions it may take more frequent or consistent treatments to return to a more stable state of balance.

Q.  CAN REIKI BE PERFORMED ON PETS?

A.  Yes, any living being can benefit from Reiki.  Like humans, pets can get out of balance.  For example, they are often kept inside all day and have only a few hours outside, when they are naturally supposed to be outside most, if not all, day.  Reiki can help alleviate the physical and emotional effects on pets of such modern living conditions, just as it does with humans.

Pets usually LOVE energy healing, and respond by relaxing under the table (with crystals), curling up in their owners’ laps, or lying in their beds during treatment.
